Residents fed up with non-stop illegal dumping in Marlboro

MARLBORO – Residents of Marlboro Gardens are fed up with the non-stop illegal dumping in an open space along Violet Crescent.

Multiple trucks can be seen dumping rubble and rubbish throughout the day at the site.

“Why must we pay our rates and taxes to have our rubbish taken if other people are just allowed to dump their rubbish anywhere?” asked one of the residents who did not wish to be named.

The resident also said that when the truck drivers are confronted about the dumping, they tell residents that they pay to dump in the area. “We might as well also dump here if this is now an official dumping spot,” she added.

Another resident, who also did not wish to be named, explained that the area is now infested with flies because dirty diapers and all kinds of rubbish is being dumped at the site. She also said the dumping has been going on since last year and the people living around the site are the ones most affected by the dust, smell and noise.

“The heaps of rubbish and rubble are just getting bigger and bigger,” she added.

“Nobody is helping us to resolve this issue.”

The residents said they have been waiting for Ward 109 councillor Lillian Kekana to organise a meeting on how to tackle the issue and they have not received any feedback or action from Kekana as yet.

When asked about the matter, Kekana said she is currently in talks with Metro police and Pikitup on finding a way forward with the dumping issue. “The truth of the matter is as long as there are open spaces, people will continue to dump illegally,” said Kekana.

“I urge residents to be patient with me and the process, there will be a meeting. Metro police have also been notified.”

Kekana also said she has been speaking to officials from social development on ways to stop illegal dumping in the area.

Edna Mamonyane, spokesperson of Metro police advised residents to try and take a photograph of the truck which is dumping illegally.

“Make sure that the truck’s number plate is visible, then contact the Metro police and report it,” she added.
