Soccer legends honoured at JSE market opening

JOBURG – Three of South Africa’s most recognised sports figures were honoured on 27 January at the first market opening ceremony hosted by The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE).

The event took place on 27 January in Sandton and saw Dr Irvin Khoza, Orlando Pirates chairman; Kaizer Motaung, founder and chairman of Kaizer Chiefs; and Ephraim ‘Jomo’ Sono, chairman of Jomo Cosmos, celebrated for their contribution to the advancement of soccer in the country.

Mpho Ledwaba, head of marketing of the JSE, explained the significance of hosting the ceremony. “Basically, we hosted a ceremony with these legends to open the market and let ordinary South Africans know that the JSE is, as always, open for business,” Ledwaba said.

He explained that getting the likes of Khoza and Motaung involved came from wanting to invite accomplished South Africans who have made a valuable contribution in their field, and celebrate them for that.

The ceremony was also a way to make the stock exchange more appealing to citizens and get more people interested in how the exchange operates.

“It’s something we’ve always done and it’s our way of celebrating artists and the important role they play,” he said.

The three men opened the stock exchange to much celebration and thanked the JSE for honouring them and recognising their contributions.
