Rose Act project celebrates 25 years with excellence awards

ALEXANDRA – Parents, tutors and residents joined the Rose-Act Saturday school in celebrating excellence amongst its pupils at their annual awards ceremony hosted in Alexandra.

The school, part of a project by charity Rays of Hope, hosted the awards ahead of their 25-year anniversary at the Central Johannesburg College, Alexandra Campus.

Louise Cameron, project co-ordinator for Rose-Act, explained the importance of hosting the awards for the pupils.

“We believe that excellence should be rewarded [because] it provides a goal for our children and they love being recognised, and receiving certificates and trophies,” she said.

She also praised the increased attendance at the school, with an impressive 90+ percent attendance record from 78 pupils, up from 54 in 2014.

Award categories included those for attendance, improvement, performance, participation and effort while three more awards were handed out for activities outside the classroom such as general knowledge tests, spelling proficiency and chess.

The Rose-Act project was established in 1991 by non-profit organisation, Rays of Hope, and is focused on improving the maths and English skills of pupils residing in Alexandra.

Rays of Hope, based in Hurlingham, has a variety of projects within Alexandra community, including working with child-headed households and skills development.
