First day at school for 5-year-old with heart defect

BUCCLEUCH – It was an emotional first day at school on 13 January for a five-year-old boy diagnosed with a congenital heart defect.

With all the back-to-school excitement in the air, this year Ayaan Bhoopal joined other Buccleuch Primary School Grade R pupils on their first day of school.

By 7.30am, Bhoopal was already seated at his desk and ready to start colouring in and his sponsored portable oxygen machine was right there next to him.

“We’re still trying to figure out how we can make it easy for him to carry the oxygen machine at school,” explained Seshma, Bhoopal’s mother.

The portable oxygen machine is what is making it possible for Bhoopal to be at school with other children. Previously he was kept at home to protect him from infections that could affect his condition further.

He was joined by other excited Grade R pupils who were also looking forward to being at school.

Bhoopal’s teachers are also thrilled to have him at the school and are looking forward to the year ahead with him.
