Another strike hits Joburg

JOBURG - Following the disruptive Pikitup strike recently, the City was hit by another strike and Metro police confirmed that services are affected at all licensing and testing stations in Johannesburg.

Metro police spokesperson, Wayne Minnaar said, “The municipal licensing and testing stations in Joburg remain closed on 14 December due to an ongoing strike. The centres included Randburg, Langlaagte, Midrand, Sandton, Roodepoort, Martindale and Marlboro. Affected learner drivers not allowed to do their tests will be accommodated on another date at no extra cost. We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience.”

Some reports stated that licensing departments in parts of Johannesburg had been shut down due to the strike by members of the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) who were not available for comment. It’s understood the group is upset about an external advert that has been published calling for new staff.

City of Johannesburg spokesperson, Nthatisi Modingoane said staff members are disgruntled because the department advertised positions externally and not internally.

Modingoane said, “The department apologises for the inconvenience caused. Motorists are urged to use the post office to renew licence discs. Efforts are underway to resolve the issue and we hope the situation will normalise by 15 December.”

It was said that customers were turned away after queuing at the Randburg and Roodepoort centres for most of the day.

On the City of Johannesburg Twitter handle, @CityofJoburgZA it was said, “Efforts are underway to resolve the issue and we hope the situation will normalise.”
