St Stithians takes a stand against alcohol and drug use by young people

SANDTON – The headmasters of two Sandton boys' high schools have joined the call to combat alcohol and drug use amongst young people in schools.

These schools, St Stithians Boys’ College and St David’s Marist Inanda, have issued a statement, along with the heads of various boys’ high schools around Gauteng, sharing their concerns and urging parents and authorities to play their part in combating these social issues.

One of the issues highlighted included the need for parents to be educated and to educate their children on the research on the negative impact of both alcohol and recreational drugs.

“We also urge parents to recognise their obligations under the law, and to not allow underage drinking in their homes,” the statement read.

“[Additionally] we urge them to interact with each other and present a united front by drawing up an agreement, pact or charter in each school.”

The statement released also urged the authorities to enforce the law regarding the sale of alcohol to minors and the selling of drugs while undertaking to facilitate educational programmes in their schools, aimed at both the parents and staff members.

Other signatory schools included Jeppe Boys’ High School, King Edward VII School and Parktown Boys’ High School.
