Tlamela said, “It is very important for people to drink alcohol responsibly; whenever there is a celebration people should promote safe behaviour.”
When going out she advised the following:
- One should plan their night out; tell someone where you are going and when you will be back.
- You should never walk home alone. Remember, there is safety in numbers but if you have no other option, walk in well-lit areas.
- Take care when carrying a handbag, smartphone or tablet in crowded areas and keep them in a safe location, within view.
- Be alert and watch out for pickpockets in crowded areas.
- Keep handbags zipped and don’t put your wallet in your back pocket.
- When in bars and restaurant take note of where you store your coats and handbags.
- At ATMs take out as much money as you need, cover your pin and call a guard if you believe the machine has been compromised.
- Ensure your car is locked by checking the door handles before leaving your car, and make sure you park and lock your car in a secure well-lit area, keeping valuables, including bags and coats hidden.
Tlamela urges the community to be responsible this festive season.
