Suspect arrested following tip-off

MORNINGSIDE – Following information received by a police officer that a suspected stolen vehicle was parked at Morningside Shopping Centre, a suspect met his downfall and was arrested.

Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, spokesperson for Sandton Police Station, explained that the officer acted on the tip-off and found the car parked with no one inside. “The officer then went to the centre management to view the footage and it revealed a man driving into the centre in the car,” he said.

The footage further showed the man walking into the mall and heading to one of the restaurants. Maphakela confirmed that the officer then went to the restaurant and arrested the suspect on the spot.

“He was detained at Sandton Police Station and charged with possession of a suspected stolen vehicle,” he said.

Responding to the matter, the Morningside Shopping Centre manager, Sharon Henry, clarified that no crime took place at the centre, but that they were contacted by the police regarding the incident.

“We assisted the police who viewed CCTV footage, and will continue to assist the police where we can,” she said.

She added that the safety of the centre’s shoppers, retailers and their staff remained of paramount importance.

The suspect has since made an appearance at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court. The case continues.
