City of Johannesburg spokesperson Nthatisi Modingoane said the staff members are disgruntled because the department advertised positions externally and not internally. Modingoane said, “The department apologises for the inconvenience caused. Motorist are urged to use the post office to renew licence discs. Efforts are underway to resolve the issue and we hope the situation will normalise by tomorrow.”
Some reports are that licensing departments in parts of Johannesburg have been shut down due to a strike by members of municipal workers union South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) who were not available for comment. It’s understood the group is upset about an external advert that has been published calling for new staff. It was said that customers were turned back after queuing at the Randburg and Roodepoort centres for most of the day. It was said that earlier today the City of Joburg alerted customers to strike.
