Small town girl wants to be New York’s next top model

GALLO MANOR – Small town girl, Shernice Ground (19) has big ambitions of one day becoming a top model overseas and she needs the support of the community to help her reach her dream.

She’s from Sabie, a small town in Mpumalanga, and now resides in Gallo Manor so she can be closer to a modelling school in Rivonia where she attends modelling classes. “Modelling is a passion that I was born with,” she said.

Ground has been modelling since the age of six. She said her mother had always supported her dream but pushed her to finish school first. “Now that I am done with school, I’m going after my dream with all I have,” she said.

She became a finalist in the International Talent Showcase competition, where she competed alongside other finalists across the country. The finalists were all competing for the attention of Kim Myers, executive director of Applause Rising Talent Showcase.

Myers sought the best candidates from the competition to showcase their talent in New York in July next year, and Ground was one of the chosen few.

“Modelling defines me, I am at my happiest when I am walking on the ramp, it just comes natural and it brings out the best in me,” she said.

“This is my chance to make New York aware that we have talent in South Africa.”

One of her favourite models is South African model, Candice Swanepoel, who has modelled for Victoria’s Secret. “My main objective is to ensure that my province, Mpumalanga, and my country as a whole, is well represented in New York while at the same time realising my childhood dream of becoming an international model,” said Ground.

Her current challenge is that her family cannot afford to take her to New York. “My mother has been trying to assist me in raising funds in my hometown, but we need help,” she said.

“Any form of sponsorship or donations will be welcomed, even the smallest amount can really make a difference and make my dream come true.”
