The #challenges taken up by today’s youth

JOHANNEBSURG – Once, taking up a challenge meant performing a duel or climbing a mountain.

However, these days it seems you can take any crazy idea, slap a hashtag in front of it and convince millions of people around the world to do it.

The latest of these ‘challenges’ is the #condomchallenge. While most people think it’s one of the better ones because it is ‘encouraging young people to use protection’, it’s really just another way to garner attention online, while looking silly for no reason.

The challenge is to partially fill a condom with water, tie it closed and then drop it over a friend’s head, creating a mask as the condom falls over the person’s face without bursting. Apparently the idea is to spread awareness about the importance of condoms and prove to any man who thinks he’s ‘too big’ that a condom can comfortably hold a gallon of water.

This challenge comes in the wake of the #kyliejennerlipchallenge, where youngsters placed a glass or other cylindrical object over their lips and sucked the air out in order to get the plump pout recently adopted by the Kardashian reality star.

However, instead of getting a perfect trout pout, many were left with bruised and swollen lips.

Another ridiculous trend that swept the internet over the last few years was the condom snorting challenge. This involved youngsters from around the world filming themselves snorting a condom up their nose, only to pull it out through their mouth. They would then load the videos onto Youtube.com

Here’s an example of the challenge posted by Carissa Coleman in America:

Thousands of videos were posted online, with many participants joking and even vomiting in attempts to snort a condom, with many failing to realise the potential danger of choking on the latex as it could be sucked into your trachea or lungs.

It is possible that the entire #challenge saga was started by the infamous #IceBucketChallenge, which was originally started to raise money and awareness for ALS. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a progressive neuro-degenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord and the challenge did, in fact, raise money for the cause in America.

However, a few of the videos went wrong as buckets filled with water were dropped on people’s heads, instead of simply pouring the water out, leading to neck and head injuries.
