Pikitup launches a recovery plan

JOBURG - PIKITUP unveiled a refuse recovery plan to clean the inner-city and to collect refuse bins from surrounding suburbs and townships.

This plan is geared at clearing the backlog created by the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) strike.

Councillor Matshidiso Mfikoe apologised on behalf of the City of Johannesburg and Pikitup for the disruptions of waste management services and the severe inconvenience to residents of Joburg.

“Let me at the outset condemn the vandalism that took place in our city. There can be no justification, under any circumstances, for trashing the city, which belongs to residents,” said Mfikoe in a statement.

Pikitup Director Amanda Nair said the five day interruption of services has resulted in 30 thousand tons of waste pilling up and this is a serious health hazard.
