Corporate South Africa gives back

JOBURG - A plethora of South African business leaders gathered at the Hilton Hotel in Sandton to launch South Africa Day on 12 November.

Led by global investment strategist Chris Hart as chairman and Archbishop Thabo Makgoba, who will serve as president, the South Africa Day initiative would, in future, be celebrated by South African businesses annually on the second Saturday of November. The day will act as a motivation for South African businesses to work within and support their local communities.

National co-ordinator, Bheki Shongwe said, “South Africa Day would focus on making a contribution to the country and will put South Africa first. [It will signify the] creation of social cohesion, celebrating the country, its people and achievements, and [the day will take] pride [in its] people and country.”

Chris Hart said he was looking forward to corporate South Africa driving and supporting South Africa Day, and for each company to contribute its share to the South Africa Day initiative.

He added, “We cannot afford to have exclusivity in terms of who can or cannot support South Africa Day, this is supposed to be a joint or collaborative initiative.”

Archbishop Thabo Makgoba urged the business community to support the South Africa Day Bursary Fund which would raise funds to support deserving students and pupils. He said he is where he is today because of opportunities that were created for him by others.
