Bogus Sandton attorney busted for fraud and theft

SANDTON – A bogus attorney in Sandton was recently busted for fraud and theft.

This according to Lieutenant Colonel Andre de Klerk of Sandton police, who also said the accused is expected to appear in Randburg Magistrates’ Court on 11 December for charges of fraud and theft.

De Klerk said the bogus attorney was caught out after using fraudulent documents to apply for a job and stealing his clients’ money for personal use. “It was also discovered that he was not registered with the Law Society of South Africa,” added De Klerk.

A practicing attorney, who wishes to remain anonymous, said the accused has been pretending to be an attorney in Sandton since 2013.

“He just carries on and just moves on to another area to continue doing the same thing,” the attorney said. “There is no certainty of him even completing his degree. I have some of his clients who said he did not even know case law procedures or the jargon.”

The anonymous attorney said he was shocked at the incompetence of the bogus attorney after he met him. “I just knew something was not right with him,” he added.
