Man shoots intruder in the head in Hyde Park

HYDE PARK – An armed robbery suspect was left for dead, with a bullet lodged in his head, in the parking lot of Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital on 19 November after an attempt to rob a Hyde Park home took a wrong turn.

The incident was confirmed by Bramley Police Station spokesperson, Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, who stated that the suspect along with three other accomplices, tried to gain entry into the home by lifting the gate off its rails.

One of the home’s occupants was standing outside the house when he saw the four men, allegedly wearing balaclavas, come onto the property and screamed to warn others inside.

“The suspects then began shooting at the house, but another man came outside and returned fire, injuring one suspect,” said Maphakela.

The suspects then fled in two vehicles, an Audi A4 and a BMW, proceeding to rush their injured accomplice to the hospital, where they supposedly pushed him out of the Audi and drove off, leaving him in the parking lot. The man succumbed to a fatal head wound shortly after.

“The Audi was later recovered,” Maphakela continued. “The seats were covered in blood. A 9mm pistol, whose serial number was filed off, was also found.”

Maphakela said that the home occupant who shot the robber will not be arrested, due to him acting in self-defence.

“A case of attempted robbery and attempted murder has been opened,” said Maphakela. “A manhunt has been launched to locate the other three suspects.”
