World Diabetes Day event, get tested

JOBURG - The Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology would like everyone to join them for the annual World Diabetes Day.

World Diabetes Day falls on 14 November this year and the Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology will create awareness with an event to be held in Norwood on the day.

The centre has released alarming information and statistics about the illness and this is why it is important to know your status.

A study conducted by the centre reveals that about half of diabetes sufferers in South Africa are unaware of their condition, and thus it can be estimated that almost 8.3 percent of the country’s population suffers from the disease.

Janice Pillay, a diabetes sufferer, encourages activation days such as these to be held as it may be detrimental to the health of many.

“It’s important to have these days because there will be professionals who will test people and teach them about proper meal plans and how to live a lifestyle that will allow them to live a long life,” she said.

The centre is well known for their expertise with regards to diabetes and they encourage physical activity among diabetes sufferers – despite the fact that sufferers may feel that physical activity is bad for their health. The centre is also known for their work with professional athlete and diabetes sufferer, South African heavyweight boxer, Flo Simba.

The World Diabetes Day event will allow people the chance to check their blood sugar and glucose levels completely free of charge because the centre insists that the path to optimum diabetes health begins with knowledge.

While it is important for everyone to get checked for signs of diabetes, it is especially important for people who have a history of diabetes running in their family to be checked by professionals.

The activities are set to begin at 9am.
