CPF issues safety tips to Sandton residents

SANDTON – As the festive season approaches, Sandton residents were issued with safety and security precautions to ensure their homes are safe ahead of the holiday season.

These tips were issued by the Community Police Forum Sector 4 and included tips for domestic workers and gardeners on reporting crime. The police urged employees to contact them first in the event of a criminal incident, before contacting their employer, as the police need to react swiftly.

Residents should inform neighbours when going away and give trusted neighbours access to their house to switch on the lights in the evening.

Finally, the forum stressed the importance of ensuring that all security provisions were enabled before leaving and to ask trusted friends to house sit while away on holiday.

Other tips include:

  •  Make sure that electric fencing is functioning properly
  •  Ensure that gates/electric gates cannot be derailed and removed. There have been numerous incidences of this occurring recently – perpetrators derail and move sliding gates and gain access to properties. Ensure that gates have an anti-lift device
  •  Report areas of concern with regards to security to the police, security companies and CPF members immediately
  •  Report any suspicious behaviour to the police, security companies and CPF members immediately. Keeping quiet about suspicious behaviour benefits only the perpetrator
  •  Support your local Community Police Forum
  •  Homeowners whose houses or complexes have electric gates should ensure the gates have closed behind them when leaving or entering the property
  •  Familiarise yourself with crime hotspots in your sector and suburb.
