Part of a statement issued by the company read, “South Africa’s cash industry remains resilient and flexible in changing its strategies in order to mitigate their risks, strategies which seem to be working.”

Mark Barrett, SBV managing director, said crime in the cash environment was becoming increasingly sophisticated with technology, violence and intelligence mechanisms playing a greater role in attempts to commit these crimes.

However, Barrett asserted that the cash industry was one step ahead in taking a stand in the fight against crime. “We have the technology, intelligence and resources to evolve at an even greater rate,” he said

Beyond the physical cash that is targeted, cash services companies are also aware of the need to protect their employees, the public and their clients’ premises.

Barrett said their employees put their lives at risk on a daily basis, and despite facing dangerous working conditions, they continue to play a significant role in ensuring that enough cash is in circulation for business transactions, ATM machines, and daily withdrawals.

“I commend all those involved in the protection of our lives for their bravery and for making our environment safer,” said Barrett.
