Metro police applauded for job well done in Kelvin

KELVIN – A Metro police presence has a remarkable calming effect on motorists during peak hour traffic.

This according to Ward 109 deputy branch chairperson, Werner Smit, who was pleasantly surprised to find orderly traffic where usually there’s mayhem on Eastern Services Road in Kelvin. There were Metro officers and a pointsman assisting in traffic control.

“Their mere presence had a remarkable calming effect on the maverick behaviour of most drivers,” he said.

Werner explained that during peak hour traffic, the M1 highway clogged up and additional pressure was placed on Eastern Services Road.

“For most Kelvin residents to get in and out of the suburb, they access the Eastern Services Road via South Way,” he added.

“Besides the heavy traffic, which is expected, bad behaviour by some drivers makes the road downright dangerous.”

Werner urged Metro police to look at deploying more officers to have a presence at high traffic congestion areas in the city of Johannesburg.

“There should be no reason why it can’t be done most peak hours on weekdays,” he added.

“We urge the Metro police to build this intervention into their operational plan. Besides the convienience to road users, it builds a culture of compliance with the law and it may also save lives in future.”

Wayne Minnaar, spokesperson for Metro police said, “I’m glad to see the impact officers and pointspersons can have on the road, which they will continue to do.”

He added that Metro police would be consistent when deploying officers to deal with problematic areas.
