Ster-Kinekor launches new eye project

JOBURG – Ster-Kinekor commemorated 10 years of eradicating preventable blindness for more than 281 100 previously disadvantaged children.

Vision Mission is the movie house’s leading corporate social investment initiative that has been providing eye screening tests and pairs of spectacles for thousands of disadvantaged school pupils across South Africa. Geraldine Engelman, corporate social initiative manager of Ster-Kinekor Theatres said since Vision Mission was launched in 2005, their aim was to eradicate preventable blindness in all South African children.

To celebrate their 10-year milestone, Vision Mission invited media guests, strategic partners and supporters, and 100 pupils of Tahoma Primary School in Katlehong, one of the schools they have supported, to attend the launch of their new programme.

At the launch, Vision Mission announced that going forward with their project, it had committed to assist in corneal transplant operations for South African children.

“Sight is such a special gift that we take for granted,” said Kuben Pillay, chairperson of Primedia, one of the strategic partners of Ster-Kinekor.

Virginia Mawela, the deputy director of eye care at the Gauteng Department of Health, said there was still a lot more that the government could do to increase partnerships. “Let us focus on getting more people the opportunity to access the corneal transplant operation is South Africa,” said Mawela. She added that she would be taking the message for more corneal transplants to take place, back to government.

After all the formalities, the pupils and guests were treated to a screening of Hotel Transylvania 2 and South African film, Ayanda.
