Mass prayer held to honour fallen police

JOBURG - The City of Johannesburg hosted a mass prayer day with different religious groups on 22 October at the Standard Bank Arena in Johannesburg in honour of the men and women who paid the ultimate price in the fight against crime.

The aim of the mass prayer day was to raise awareness on the importance of the police presence in communities and to stop the killing of police. It also aimed at encouraging the creation of partnerships between police and their communities in fighting crime in unity.

About 5 000 people attended the mass prayer day, including those from faith-based organisations, business representatives, community leaders, Community Policing Forum representatives, church leaders and government officials.

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Health and Social Development in the City of Johannesburg, councillor Nonceba Molwele said, “It is important for individuals to get spiritual strength from somewhere, irrespective of their religions or beliefs. Various religious leaders prayed for all the social ills that are happening in the country, including substance abuse, police killings and crimes against women and children.

“We need divine intervention in our country to ensure that we exorcise the devil, whether it is in the form of drugs, rape against women and children, or killing of law enforcement officers.”

The gathering was addressed by the City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor, Parks Tau and representatives from the South African Police Services and Metro police. Community members were invited to attend the mass prayer and were urged to report on any individual they are aware of who is involved or responsible for criminal activities in future.
