Voices of Sandton: Struggling to make a living in Sandton

SANDTON – "My only hope is that I am able to shape my life and give my children a better future than the one I had," said Nelson Mabunda, who is originally from Limpopo.

Mabunda (45) has been working as a security guard in Sandton for four years now and is struggling to obtain decent work within the area. He’s been in Johannesburg since 1999 and in Sandton since 2012.

“I grew up in a rural village, but I decided to leave and come to Johannesburg because there were no jobs back home. I thought that coming to the City would help improve my situation and I hoped to be employed by a big company; but thus far, it has been a struggle to improve my prospects.”

All Mabunda wants is to provide for his three children, something his current job does not allow him to do adequately, and he said he needs a challenging job that will offer more.

Mabunda obtained his matric in 1996 and proceeded to train as a guard in the same year.

“I decided to talk openly about this because I realised that if you don’t talk, people won’t realise you need help – and I’m hoping that someone will be touched by my plea and help.”
