City sends out support following M1 bridge collapse

SANDTON - Following the horrific collapse of the pedestrian bridge over the M1 highway on 14 October, the City of Johannesburg has been closely monitoring the condition of the injured victims.

 

According to the latest report from the City of Johannesburg, nine people have been discharged from different hospitals. Of the 10 people still in hospital, seven are in a stable condition and three are critical.

Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Parks Tau visited the injured victims on the evening of the collapse and described the incident as the most tragic he had ever seen. Tau sent out sincere condolences to the KwaZulu-Natal families of the two victims who lost their lives in the collapse.

One of the deceased was buried on 17 October, while another will be buried over the upcoming weekend.

“We also wish all the people who were injured, both those who are still in hospital and the ones discharged, a speedy recovery. The accident was indeed very tragic as not only were lives lost, but people were badly injured and traumatised,” Tau said.

The City of Johannesburg began investigations pertaining to the collapse, with Tau stating, “At this stage it is unknown what caused the collapse of the scaffolding, however, families are awaiting answers and a team of engineers was assigned by the City to establish what caused the accident and are currently hard at work to get these answers as soon as possible.”
