Sandton detective’s wife mistaken for hijacker and shot dead

SANDTON – A Sandton police officer’s wife was shot and killed in Tembisa after being mistaken for a hijacker on 16 October.

Lieutenant Colonel Andre de Klerk from Sandton police, said the sergeant’s brother-in-law was also shot but he was not fatally injured.

He said the sergeant’s wife was shot inside the vehicle by Edenvale reservists. De Klerk explained that the wife’s vehicle looked similar to a hijacked vehicle the police had been looking for and the registration number was almost identical to that of the hijacked vehicle. “The vehicle registration number started the same,” added De Klerk.

The incident is now under investigation.

This is an ongoing story. More information will be revealed as it becomes available.
