Make a difference on World Food Day

JOHANNESBURG – Today is World Food Day, a day of action against hunger. While you may not be able to feed the world, there are things you can do at home in order to make a difference.

World Food Day falls on 16 October and was first established in 1979. All across the world, thousands of people unite to take a stand against hunger. October is also World Hunger Month, so here are a few tips on how you can make a difference.

1. Make a shopping list. It’s easy to get lost in the aisles of tasty goodies, and you always end up picking up things you really don’t need. Making a list will not only make your shopping trip quicker, but will guarantee that you only get the essentials.

2. Clean your fridge out every week. You may find a few things that you might not want to reheat and eat, but bear in mind that fruit that is going soft can be used to make smoothies and veggies that are wilting can be used to make stock or stews.

3. Only cook as much as you’ll eat. It’s easy to get carried away and cooking a certain amount of food can be tricky. If you do cook too much, try freezing some of what’s left. Then you’ll have a ready-made meal handy.

4. If you do have a ton of food left over, consider separating it into meals and giving them to those who do not have food.

5. Grow a garden. Nothing beats fresh herbs and veggies! And you’ll save a ton of money.
