The day was a fun-filled community market day as parents of the pupils enjoyed the entertainment provided.
According to principal of the college, Bruce Lindsay, it was a dream come true to see the college turning 25. He added that the celebration was not just for turning 25, but also about the college having given an excellent education to special needs children in that time.
“We celebrate this day with the stars of the show which are the pupils of this college – this is their day,” Lindsay said.
“We wanted to open the centre of excellence and we now want to offer other sports for disabled children. We are looking forward to another 25 years of growing awareness toward special needs education.”
Unity College is a special needs school that was founded in 1990. It was opened by parents who did not want their children to be institutionalised due to their intellectual disabilities.
The school opened with 27 pupils and was run from Temple Shalom in Orange Grove with five teachers. There were no funds, and so parents and teachers pitched in and brought equipment, reading books and resources from home.
In 1992, the school moved to Temple Emanuel in Oxford Road as the Orange Grove premises had become too small.
In 1996, the school moved to Witkoppen and in June this year, Unity College finally had their dream school built in Broadacres.
