WATCH: Metro police speak out about alleged assault of motorist

BRAMLEY - It is alleged that a motorist was assaulted by JMPD officers after they failed to tell him what they were being fined for.

Metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said, “JMPD officers pulled over a black Mercedes-Benz at 8.20pm for having illegal plates.”

According to Minnaar, the passenger of the vehicle started to argue with the JMPD officer and grabbed his summons book.

“The passenger was arrested and taken to Bramley Police Station and a docket was opened against him.”

According to Minnaar, allegations were allegedly made against the JMPD officer that he was drunk. Minnaar, however, has denied this claim. “After investigating the matter, the JMPD officers that were on the scene were found not to be drunk,” added Minnaar.

According to the eyewitness, the passenger who was arrested was released on bail this morning due to be in court on 12 October. The incident was reported to Andre Snyman of Eblockwatch, Police on Record.

Two males were allegedly pulled over at about 8.30pm on Corlett Drive in Bramley by Johannesburg Metropolitan Police (JMPD) where one of them was arrested.

According to an eyewitness who wishes to remain anonymous, he was allegedly driving from having dinner with friends to pick up another friend who was going to join them from Grayston Drive in Sandton.

The eyewitness said, “While we were at dinner, a friend who was joining us didn’t know the area so I went with another one of my friends to fetch him to show him the way to the restaurant.”

According to the eyewitness, they were pulled over shortly after leaving.

“We were stopped by JMPD and my feeling was that they were trying to solicit a bribe. We were in a Mercedes and are young and that they were trying to get something from us, ” added the eyewitness.

According to the eyewitness, matters began to get out of hand when one policeman allegedly asked them to sign for a fine, however did not show them the charge sheet.

“My friend who was with me in the car asked to see what we were being fined for but the policeman refused to do so. It is our right to see it, ” added the eyewitness.

According to the eyewitness, the two were allegedly physically and verbally  assaulted by police after asking to see the charges against them.

“The policeman swore at one of our mothers and that isn’t right. They (police) can’t conduct themselves in that manner, ” he said.

According to the eyewitness, his friend was allegedly arrested for resisting arrest and taken to Bramley Police Station.

“I followed the JMPD with my friend in custody to the police station. I feel they detained him because he was assaulted by them and they wanted time for the swelling to go down.”

According to the eyewitness, when he arrived he was dismissed and told that they(police) were not going to deal with him.

He said, “I was told by police to get out of their house and that I was not allowed to film them.”
