Contestants from Sunninghill show off culinary excellence

SUNNINGHILL – Two Capsicum Culinary Studio students will take part in a culinary excellence competition sponsored by Tastic Rice.

Taseen Khan and Tatum Eckstein from the studio in Sunninghill are representing the whole of Gauteng in the Tastic Just Add Colour competition. They are part of seven students who have been challenged to conceptualise seven dishes (one for each day of the week), using Tastic Rice as a core ingredient.

The defining criterion is that these dishes be simple and easy to prepare any day of the week, while serving up a seven-colour feast.

The participants are high-achieving students from culinary institutions across South Africa who, in front of a live audience, will demonstrate their culinary prowess using Tastic Rice. Each student has been assigned a mentor chosen from a group of foodies, chefs, food bloggers and authors. They will be helping them refine their menus, ensure they stick to the brief and deliver the best possible dish.

Since their selection in mid-July, the students have been feverishly preparing for the ultimate leg of the event, scheduled to take place in Johannesburg on 30 September.

“We are keenly interested in the development of the culinary arts in our country, and what better way to ensure the progress of the food industry than by working with young South African talent?” asked Chetan Rajput, category executive of Tastic.

“Each of our participants is [an] extremely gifted and hard-working chef in training, and we’re proud to be part of their journey in food.”

Tastic has enlisted the services of a group of judges to evaluate the meals prepared on the evening of the event. Renowned chef Benny Masekwameng; accomplished chef and food writer, Anna Trapido; and media personality, Azania Mosaka, have confirmed their participation as Just Add Colour judges.
