Small amount of drugs doesn’t equal small offence

SANDTON - In a routine stop and search operation undertaken by the Sandton police on 19 September, three suspects were arrested in separate cases of drug possession.

The three suspects were arrested in Parkmore, Morningside and Sunninghill. Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said upon searching the men, police officers discovered small amounts of marijuana on each of the suspects.

He added that police arrest people every day on drug possession charges. Most of these people had the notion that having a small quantity of drugs in their possession would equal a small offence.

He said, “I want everyone to know that if you carry drugs on the street, no matter how small, you will be arrested. Even though you see it as something small, your fingerprints will be taken and you will get a criminal record. And this is not good for job applications.”
