Explosion mystery solved

FOURWAYS - Fourways Mall recently addressed the numerous concerns raised by Paulshof, Douglasdale, Bryanston, Magaliessig and Craigavon residents to Fourways Review regarding the sound of explosions coming from the mall.

Management of Fourways Mall, on 17 September, said this was caused the blasting of rocks to make way for mall upgrades.

Among those who raised their concerns was Paulshof resident Pia Malcolm. She said she heard about five explosion-like sounds which she thought came from the vicinity of Fourways, Dainfern, Kyalami or Steyn City between 5.45am and 6.15am.

Malcolm added that the sounds could be heard from outside her house in the early hours of the morning and she speculated they were from construction or roadworks, as she could hear banging and blasting.

Another concern was raised by Craigavon resident, Hermien Grobler, who said that over the past few of months, every morning at around 5.30am to 5.45am she could hear explosion-like sounds in the area and she had no idea where they came from as there were no notifications about anything being blown up.

Grobler added that on the morning of 17 September, she heard noises and said that her house shook with the first noise, and expressed how worried she was because her dogs were in a complete state of panic and were being frightened by such loud sounds so early in the morning.

According to marketing manager of Fourways Precinct, Marjike Arran, the blasts would not cause any damage or deterioration to the mall. The aim of the blasts was to break through rocks so construction of the basement parking in the mall could commence.

She added the blasts were scheduled to occur from 5.30am to 6am and precautionary measures were being taken when blasting.
