DeafSA and the City of Joburg have partnered up to bring South Africa a number of talent events to showcase what deaf professionals do in industries that hearing people often don’t associate them with.
Katleho Mhangwane, acting project manager at DeafSA, explained what the showcases will have in store for the people of the country.
“The events are being held to raise awareness about the deaf and to encourage the hearing community to partake in the activities that will help them understand the deaf,” she said.
“It will showcase the heritage of the deaf and their culture. There will be deaf DJs, people who do poetry and dance and, basically, these events are to let people know that they can do what everyone else can do.”
This will no doubt get the hearing community asking questions about how they do it.
“We want people to ask ‘how’ and get more questions coming in and more events going on to let people know about the arts, talents and capabilities of the deaf,” said Mhangwane.
There will be two events held in Joburg:
The Deaf Fashion Show will showcase the design talents of the deaf on a stage for all to see.
