Swinging for Rays of Hope

BRYANSTON – Big and small corporate companies once again descended upon Bryanston for the annual Rays of Hope Golf Day fundraiser event.

Rays of Hope, a non-profit organisation based in Hurlingham, hosted the charitable event at the Bryanston Country Club with the aim of raising funds for its Saturday School project in Alexandra.

The event also saw the organisation’s launch of the Rose Act, which appeals to companies and individuals to sponsor pupils from the schools the organisation works with.

Jennifer Adams, CEO of Rays of Hope, explained that the Rose Act initiative was introduced this year, with the hope of growing it over the years.

“Basically, the appeal is to companies and individuals to sponsor one of 32 children for a year, with the money going towards their educational needs for the year and beyond,” she said.

Adams also touched on the organisation’s Saturday School project, explaining that it was started as a way to supplement the education system and to help underachievers neglected by the system. The school hosts pupils between grades 4 and 10 from various schools in the community.

Ilona Hilditch, executive for marketing and advertising at Alexander Forbes Insurance expressed pride at the company’s involvement in the Golf Day fundraiser.

“It’s for an amazing cause and one that ties in with looking after the wellbeing of others, something our company firmly believes in,” she said.

Hilditch added that she hoped that those in attendance would contribute towards the sponsorship.

Also present was Derek Muller, chairperson of Rays of Hope who spoke briefly of the work the organisation did in the community of Alexandra.

“I love the work being done there but the needs within the community remain enormous and this is where the golf day comes in, it’s a big part of what we do,” he said.
