200 trees donated for Spruit Day

SANDTON - As Johannesburg gets ready for spring and Spruit Day, the Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo has donated 200 new trees which will be planted along the Braamfontein Spruit on 19 September.

Spruit Day is an environmental initiative which will see 17 residents’ associations and various community organisations coming together to clean and protect the environment along the Braamfontein Spruit.

Spruit Day organiser, Ian Tumiel said, “We are absolutely delighted with this very generous donation. We were initially only expecting 100 trees so this is a real bonanza.”

All of the trees are indigenous and include wild olive, white stinkwood and black karee. Tumiel said planting trees is one of the most cost-effective ways of offsetting our carbon emissions.

“We encourage all residents to come out on 19 September to help clean up the Spruit, or get out a spade and plant a sapling for the good of the environment. We also encourage all students to take part. Children can fulfill a vital role as future environmental custodians. To quote Confucius ‘The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago; the second best time is now’,” concluded Tumiel.
