Tickey Afternoon at Bryanston Primary School

BRYANSTON – The Bryanston Primary School Grade 7 pupils are organising a mini fete called Tickey Afternoon to give back to their school before moving on to high school.

The fun-filled family day will take place at Bryanston Primary School on 29 August from 12pm to 4pm. There will also be food stalls which will be open from 11am.

Tania Roman from the school explained that Tickey Afternoon began in the early 60s when South Africa still used the monetary system of pounds, shillings and pence.

“The idea behind the day was to enable the Grade 7 pupils of Bryanston Primary School to give the school a gift by which they could be remembered, and also to give something back to the school as a special thank you for all that had been done for them during their years at the school,” added Roman.

She said Tickey Afternoon is no longer simply a fundraising event. “It is an educational exercise in co-operation, compromise, planning, how to run meetings, note taking and basic economic skills.”

By organising their own activities, Roman believes that the event encourages pupils to use their own ideas and initiative. “Contributions by individuals and companies have also ensured the success of this tradition,” she added.
