Tara Hospital opens gym

HURLINGHAM - Tara Hospital in Hurlingham, a public sector specialised psychiatric hospital, recently opened a gym on their premises.

 

Speaking during the official opening of the gym, hospital chief executive officer Doctor Florence Otieno said, “The gym will assist to overcome some challenges among the staff,” she added.

“The gym will also assist in [promoting] healthy lifestyle living and a healthy lifestyle is one of the goals of the department of health as a whole.”

She added that the gym will assist in fighting chronic diseases such as diabetes and will also decrease psycho-social diseases such as stress and hypertension. “It will be for economic gain to the country because employees will be productive in performing their duties,” said Otieno. “We are proud to have a gym as it will take care of our staff and patients will benefit as well.”

The Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorders Alliance donated the gym equipment. On the day of the opening of the gym, Virgin Active assisted with an aerobics class to get the gym going.

Insurance company Assupol sponsored the lunch on the day. “Good relationships were established with the Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorders Alliance and Assupol,” added Sibusiso Chauke, the hospital’s communications officer.
