Marikana massacre commemorated in Sandton

SANDTON - An independent, community advocacy organisation, Amandla.mobi, commemorated the third anniversary of the Marikana massacre in Sandton by taking a poster of a man wrapped in a green blanket to Nelson Mandela Square.

Zanele Sabela, on behalf of the organisation, said Mgcineni Mambush Noki, the man depicted in the poster, is recognised as the most vocal of the miners in the lead up to the massacre on 16 August 2012 and has since become a symbol of the events of that fateful day.

Amandla.mobi also planned to co-ordinate more than 50 events across the country in commeration. “What makes this anniversary of the Marikana massacre different is that the Farlam Commission has concluded and the Marikana Report has been released, yet the families of the 44 people who lost their lives are still without justice,” said Amandla.mobi campaigner, Koketso Moeti.

On the day of the Marikana massacre, miners were gunned down by police officers.

The organisation called for all South Africans to gather in their communities for a one-minute silence on 16 August to remember those massacred in Marikana and commit to stand with the organisation until there is justice.

Sabela said some of the events planned for the day of commemoration included church sermons, screenings of Marikana documentaries, panel discussions and pickets.

Moeti added that the organisation is asking the public to send messages and prayers of solidarity for the widows and family members of those who lost their lives in Marikana. “The messages of support will be collated and given to the families,” said Moeti.

Sabela added that Amandla.mobi’s goal is to turn every cellphone into a democracy-building tool by connecting like-minded people. “This is to ensure that a collective voice has more power and impact to hold political and corporate interests to account,” said Sabela.
