Post Office stamps out fuel shortage allegations but expect delays

JOBURG – Following the reports that the South African Post Office (Sapo) was in crisis, the parastatal has cautioned its customers to expect temporary sporadic delays in mail conveyance in some areas. However, Sapo CEO Mlu Mathonsi could not divulge which areas will be affected.

In Durban, it was reported that the parastatal has allegedly told local branches that no mail would be received or collected because there were financial problems with its transportation system, and the post office had no money for fuel. It was reported that although the branches were continuing with daily operations, some cautioned customers that if they posted their mail with them, there was a chance it would not reach the recipient in time.

Responding to these allegations, Mathonsi said the post office regrettably cautioned its customers to expect temporary sporadic delays in mail conveyance in some areas, owing to fleet management operational challenges which are impacting mail in transit.

Mathonsi said, “Customers are assured that the operational challenges causing these delays are short-lived and all efforts are underway to return operations to normality.

“We request customers’ understanding while we are resolving the cause of the operational challenges in this regard.”

He advised customers to liaise with branch management or any post office national call centre in instances where there are urgent deliveries, or any mail and parcel delivery-related enquiries.
