Animal Farm on stage

JOHANNESBURG – Theatre company ShakeXperience has partnered up with the Market Theatre to present the classic by George Orwell, Animal Farm.

We all remember excerpts from the book such as ‘Four legs good, two legs bad’, and how some animals are more equal than others. Now the thought-provoking novel which has been adapted for stage by Neil Coppen in a unique South African production, will hit Jozi theatres.

ShakeXperience was formed to make Shakespeare, and other setworks that are prescribed to schools by the Department of Education and independent Examination Boards, easier for pupils to understand. The theatre company helps students learn through the power of the arts.

The stage show, which has been touring the country, is meant to bring the setwork to theatrical life for high school pupils, and has been seen by more than 8 000 pupils in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. The production has also scooped two Naledi Theatre Awards.

The story is the same as you remember … an old boar tells the other animals on a farm about a dream he had, about how the animals took care of themselves and there were no humans. When he dies, three feisty younger pigs decide to make the dream a reality … and all hell breaks loose. The award-winning cast includes Mpume Mthombeni, Tshego Khutsoan and Zesuliwe Hadebe, and promises to be a night of incredible, thought-provoking entertainment.

Animal Farm will be showing at the Market Theatre, Dr John Kani Theatre from 25 August to 6 September.
