Reports of gunfire exchange between cops and suspects rock Sunninghill

SUNNINGHILL - Residents of the suburb of Sunninghill reported waking up on the morning of 13 August to sounds of barking guns as police officers and criminals allegedly exchanged gunfire.

Resident Graham Du Bourg, who lives nearer to the site of the fire clash, said the incident happened at 3.30 in the wee hours of the morning at the corner of Rivonia and Leeuwkop roads.

In an e-mail addressed to Ward 93 councillor Annette Deppe, the resident urged Deppe to put pressure on the provincial government’s Department of Roads and Transport to cut grass in their area, which he suspects to be a hiding spot for criminals.

“In light of a shootout that broke out between the police and criminals… at 3.30 this morning, we would like to know what the official stance is over the ever-growing squatter camp in the K60 down by Airdlin [Road] Park,” said Du Bourg.

Deppe said the provincial government has put out a grass cutting tender to address the residents’ concern. The DA councillor alleged that the criminals were illegal immigrants staying at a mushrooming squatter camp at K60 Road Reserve.

“Right next door there is a squatter camp of illegal immigrants. Police members raid the squatter camp time and again but always release the illegal immigrants after detaining them for 24 hours because they cannot legally hold them longer than that,” said Deppe.

Deppe urged the police to involve Department of Home Affairs officials who have the capacity and mandate to deport immigrants.
