St Stithians College pupils win gold at karate tournament

BRYANSTON – Two St Stithians Boys’ and Girls' preparatory pupils won gold at a recent karate championship.

 

Brother and sister karate team Nicholas (11) and Claudia Dobson (12) were selected to represent the Gauteng Karate Federation at the Karate South Africa National Development, South African Open and Elite Championship in Durban on 24 and 25 July.

Nicholas and Claudia competed in the category for elite athletes of South Africa who have either been national champions in the past, present or are current Proteas.

This tournament served as Karate South Africa’s ranking system for future international championships such as the Zone 6 in South Africa and the Commonwealth Championship in India.

Claudia won double gold for individual kata and kumite. Kata and kumite are karate combat techniques.

Nicholas won double gold for kata and kumite in a team as well as bronze for individual kata.
