Parkmore celebrates old trees

PARKMORE - The Friends of Field and Study held a celebration of the 100-year-old blue gum and wattle trees in the Field and Study Park in Parkmore.

It was reported that the trees might have to be cut down due to disease, but chairperson of the Friends of Field and Study, Rose Johnson said they had re-examined the trees and though many of them were diseased and dying they might not have to be removed.

Johnson added that City Parks would make the final decision.

The scheduled farewell was, in turn, a celebration of the old trees with a small group of local residents coming out in the cold to enjoy the majesty of the trees.

A talk was given by research archaeologist Revel Mason who also commended Johnson. “If it wasn’t for the effort of Rose and the Friends of Field and Study, this beautiful park would be up to the neck in concrete,” said Mason.

Though the fate of the trees in the park is still unclear, Johnson concluded that residents should celebrate the trees as they made the park what it is.
