Varsity College Sandton runs learning project

SANDTON - As part of their annual community integrated learning project, Varsity College Sandton sent some of its education and psychology students to underprivileged schools to gain valuable teaching experience.

Oratile Matlapeng, on behalf of Varsity College Sandton, said the experience provided students with vital insight into how these community schools operates, as well as allowing them to identify developmental areas in their own teaching practices.

The students chose the Sefikeng Primary School in Leeuwkop Prison as their school project for the year.

Matlapeng said the visit was filled with various activities as the students created practical lessons for the pupils and provided relevant materials.

The first year students facilitated an art lesson for the Grade Rs while the second year students conducted storytelling with the Grade 1s. The third year students created their lesson around health awareness with the Grade 3s, while the fourth year students read stories to the Grade 2s.

Students were accompanied by Varsity College Sandton student relations manager, Vasanthee Govender, the VC Cares Team as well as lecturers who volunteered to assist.

The students left Sefikeng Primary School with invaluable teaching experience and the project was a great success as well as an opportunity for the students to obtain practical experience while providing them with a glimpse into a day in the life of an educator.
