GRC honours Mandela with clean-up in Sandton

SANDTON - Members of the Glass Recycling company and Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel got their hands dirty as they participated in a clean-up in Sandton in honour of the upcoming Nelson Mandela Day.

The two companies, along with volunteers, carried out the initiative for 67 minutes along Rivonia and Protea roads, hoping to make motorists aware of the importance of recycling.

Shabeer Jhetam, CEO of the recycling company, explained that it was important for the company to play their part in honouring the late iconic leader.

“Madiba was an inspiration to all of us through his leadership and he certainly supported the idea of a clean environment, so we had to do something to honour that,” he said.

“What Madiba did for the country was amazing and we don’t want to forget him; he left us with a beautiful country and we should all take care of it.”

Jhetam added that through the various clean-up initiatives, the company hoped to change the public’s mindset towards keeping the environment clean. He stressed that litter remained a problem in the country and that only through a collective effort could it be curbed.

Adding to Jhetam’s sentiments was Mark Wernich, general manager of the hotel. “Mandela was a global icon and many people had immense respect for him and the legacy he left behind, so we wanted to take part in that and make a difference in Africa,” he said.
