Buccleuch hosts successful Mandela Day

BUCCLEUCH - The community of Buccleuch came out in their numbers to commemorate the annual Nelson Mandela Day event recently hosted by the Buccleuch Residents' Action Community (BRACe).

The fun-filled day, which took place on 18 July, saw a clean-up of the Juksei River and a day of live entertainment and activities for the kiddies.

Maria Gerondoudis, event co-ordinator, expressed gratitude at the large turnout for the day’s activities, hosted in honour of the late icon.

“The response from everyone was great, and the Metro police were also fantastic with their role as escorts for everyone; it was great to see the community come together as it did,” she said.

Gerondoudis also explained that the river clean-up was part of maintaining the environmental asset, considered to be a green belt by the association and community.

Also present was BRACe chairperson, Dumisa Dlamini, who urged community members to take the time to honour the late president by playing their part. “When someone has done so much for our country as Mandela did, it shouldn’t be difficult to do something for 67 minutes to help out others,” he said.

Following the clean-up, residents were treated to live entertainment and a concert by a variety of artists. The event also saw the launch of the Hope initiative, which aims to create a networking platform for the elderly.

The event took place at Bridge Road Park and ran from 10am to 2pm.
