JRA traffic signal upgrades still need fine-tuning

SANDTON - The traffic lights at the intersection of William Nicol and Sandton drives still need fine-tuning.

This according to Bertha Peters-Scheepers, spokesperson for the Johannesburg Roads Agency, following complaints from a motorist Soula Paizis.

“In peak hour traffic Sandton Drive is more backed up than before when leaving Sandton, so they need to re-evaluate this intersection again ensuring that traffic flows out of Sandton in the afternoons,” said Paizis.

The roads agency had adjusted the traffic signals at the intersection so that traffic exiting Sandton turning right onto William Nicol Drive, would no longer have to compete with vehicles exiting Hurlingham along St Andrews Drive which are travelling straight across William Nicol Drive onto Sandton Drive.

The idea behind the adjustments was so that the two traffic points will have their own turning signal to move through the intersection.

Peters-Scheepers explained that the timings at the intersection continued to be monitored by the roads agency. “Minor changes were again implemented on 10 July. We kindly request the public’s patience while this fine-tuning process is underway,” added Peters-Scheepers.

Ward 102 councillor David Potter said Paizis’s concern was addressed with the roads agency. “It is important to note that many motorists have also commented how the new design of traffic flow out of Sandton has increased the safety of both the motorists leaving Sandton and those leaving the suburb of Hurlingham,” he added. “Further tweaks may be necessary and I know that this has already been internally requested to be investigated.”
