Bowls of steel

MORNINGSIDE - The Morningside Country Club was the perfect setting for a day of keen socialising and fierce competition as the Morningside Petanque Club hosted a thrilling tournament on 11 July.

As a way to celebrate Bastille Day, which commemorates the beginning of the French Revolution on 14 July every year, the afternoon saw all in attendance dressed in red, white and blue while enjoying a passionate game of petanque.

The game is a form of boules with the aim of throwing a large metal bowl as close as possible to a small wooden ball known as a cochonnet, or jack.

The Morningside Petanque Club is a 20-member gathering of passionate players who meet twice a week for matches. The club was established in 2012 and the tournament saw 12 teams playing in a round-robin.

Spokesperson for the club, Jenny De Nicola, said the tournament was the perfect way to get players and non-players to socialise and play petanque while enjoying drinks and French onion soup throughout the afternoon.

Chairperson of the club, Rene de Schouwer, said the day was a success and attracted interest in the club.
