UPDATE: Gautrain Sandton Station speaks out on meter and Uber taxi squabble

SANDTON - Management of the Gautrain Sandton Station is concerned about the squabble between meter and Uber taxi drivers that occurred outside the station premises.

 

This, following reports of an alleged attack on a Uber user and driver outside the Sandton Station. Barbara Jensen, spokesperson for Gautrain said, “Gautrain has deployed more security guards at Sandton Gautrain Station to monitor the situation. The Railway police have also committed to deploy more policing at the station.”

Jensen said Gautrain followed up with the complainant and found out that the men who allegedly attacked her and an Uber driver were dressed in black pants and white shirts. “Our guards have blue uniforms,” said Jensen.

She said that apart from Gautrain doing their best to make sure that their passengers were safe, their jurisdiction was restricted to their station and station precinct.

“Once people exit our stations, the Sandton police and Metro police are responsible for the safety of the people. We are monitoring the situation and hope that an outcome between the metered taxis and Uber will be found soon.”

Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, spokesperson for the Sandton police, said they were still monitoring the area where the meter taxis park outside of Sandton City. “Nothing has been happening at the moment,” he said.
