Meter taxi drivers allegedly attack Uber car in Sandton

SANDTON - Meter taxi drivers allegedly attacked Uber taxis in Sandton recently.

This following a tweet from Talk Radio 702 host, Yusuf Abramjee who tweeted a message he received from someone who informed him of a squabble between meter taxi and Uber taxi drivers outside of Sandton City.

The message stated that violence had broken out and Uber taxi drivers were being targeted. According to the tweet, one of the attackers had a firearm, and car keys of the Uber taxis were taken. It is unknown who the person with the firearm was and who took the car keys.

This follows a meter taxi drivers’ protest on 3 July in Parktown North against Uber in Sandton, where meter taxi’s drivers handed over a memorandum stating that they wanted Uber to stop operating.

Uber Johannesburg is yet to comment.

Lucas Seale, spokesman for Gauteng Metered Taxi Operations said the drivers were concerned that Uber’s presence was making business difficult for the meter taxi drivers.
