Autopax to possibly take over PUTCO routes

JOBURG - Ismail Vadi, MEC for the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport (GDRT), announced on 29 June that Autopax, South Africa's road-based transport business, will take over many of PUTCO’s routes at an unknown point in the future.

This after PUTCO warned earlier this year that it could no longer sustain several operations in the province.

Dr Neuk Campbell MPL, the Democratic Alliance’s shadow MEC for Roads and Transport, believes that the flaw lies in the mismanagement of the bus subsidy which GDRT receives from the National Department of Transport (NDOT). “If funded and administered directly from the province, greater control could be exercised over its expenditure.”

Campbell has assured that the DA will impress the urgency of the matter on MEC Vadi, and how it must be dealt with as soon as possible before another area of public transport becomes unmanageable.
