Better act right, sister

JOBURG - It's the movie that made everyone attempt to hit that heavenly high note in song, and now Sister Act is coming to the Joburg Theatre just for you to sing along.

Made famous by the legendary Whoopi Goldberg, Sister Act is one of the newest productions to hit the Joburg Theatre stage in Johannesburg.

It has been dubbed as the biggest musical to come to Joburg this year and boasts a proudly South African cast in the premier production of the feel-good musical comedy box-office hit.

In the movie, Goldberg played the role of Deloris Van Cartier, with Candida Mosoma taking on the task of portraying the vivacious celebrity-turned nun.

“The role of Deloris Van Cartier in Sister Act is – arguably – the flashiest and most challenging role written for a black female in recent musical theatre history,” said Bernard Jay, executive producer for Joburg Theatre’s Sister Act.

“It’s a star role for a star personality with star attitude. When Candida Mosoma walked into the audition room and started being Deloris from the first moment, we all knew we had found our star.”

“It’s a little daunting stepping into Whoopi Goldberg’s shoes, but what an opportunity,” Mosoma said.

“I intend to grab it with both hands and can’t wait to make the role my own.”

The stage production premièred at the Pasadena Playhouse in California in 2006 and was produced by Whoopi Goldberg and Stage Entertainment in London in 2009; then went on to Broadway in 2011.

The musical was nominated for four Olivier Awards in London, including Best New Musical, and five Tony Awards in New York, including Best Musical.

Filled with powerful gospel music, outrageous dancing and a truly moving story, Sister Act leaves audiences breathless. A sparkling tribute to the universal power of friendship, it is a reason to rejoice!

The stage show will run from Tuesdays to Sundays, starting from 10 July and ending on 16 August.
